Mrs. Agnes Baggett

Of Montgomery, was born at Columbus, Georgia. She was the daughter of John R. and Lelia (Thomason) Beahn; granddaughter of John and Julia Ethel (Echols) Beahn of Columbus, Georgia. John R. Beahn served as a county official in Muscogee County, Georgia, for thirty-five years. Her grandfather, John Beahn, served in the Confederate Army.

Mrs. Baggett was educated in the public schools in Columbus, Georgia. She served as law clerk in the office of the district attorney of the L. & N. Railroad at Montgomery from March 1925 to October 1927, and in the Alabama Secretary of State's office from October 1927 to March 1946. She served as assistant clerk of the Supreme Court of Alabama from August 15, 1946, until the spring of 1950 when she resigned to campaign for the office of Secretary of State. She was elected Secretary of State in 1950, elected State Auditor in 1954, State Treasurer in 1958, elected to the office of Secretary of State for a second four-year term in 1962 and in 1966 was elected to the office of State Treasurer for a second four-year term. Mrs. Baggett was  actively affiliated with the civic and religious life of Montgomery. She was twice elected president of the Montgomery Business and Professional Women's Club, was president of the Alabama Federation. She was selected as one of the Top Ten Women during National Business Women's Week in October, 1963. She was for eight years superintendent of a church school department of her church. Mrs. Baggett was an active member of the American Legion Auxiliary, Past Matron of Elizabeth Armstrong Chapter 10, Order of the Eastern Star, and the Altrusa Club.

Married: George Lamar Baggett, October 14, 1926, the son of Ernest Jesse and Elizabeth (Walton) Baggett of Montgomery who formerly lived at Pine Hill, Wilcox County. He was killed in an automobile accident December 12, 1949.
